18: Not Dead, Just Resting…

Resting, and planning. I just need a properly established base of operations – and that has been quite some time in coming. Longer than I’d expected, to be honest…

Being disconnected from the rest of my projects like this, I fall back into old ways. Lazy ways. That will simply HAVE to change.

Stay tuned…

17: Some Eve-Of-Birthday Mission 101 Thoughts

Time is rather running out on my Mission 101, which is due to end on 28th September. Other matters have been eating into my free time, and the whole “environment” for most of the time I’ve been running the Mission has been different to that which I’d been expecting when I started. I’m not trying to excuse my sometimes (not even) half-hearted efforts, but… it’s like packing for a holiday in, say, Egypt, only to find out that you’re actually going to Canada – does that actually make sense? I’m not sure the metaphor fits…

I will do the best I can, given my current situation, and gladly give whatever penalty money is due to the protection of the endangered Scottish Wildcat. Come New Year, I will give it all another go, recycling as many of my unfinished or unstarted Tasks as I can, tailoring my list to what I hope will be my continuing personal circumstances.

Keep the faith!

16 – The Personal Goddess Evolves…

I’m in the process of advancing several of my craft/art-related Mission 101 Tasks, and amongst the most daunting is Task 91 – Create a personal goddess. Originally, this was going to be a decorated shop mannequin, but space considerations and other logistical issues have led to something of a rethink.

I’m now going for something a little more artistic – a figure “emerging into our reality” as though stepping through a mirror, or in this case open air – and I am already assembling my components. Not only do I have a pair of separate legs (of the kind used for displaying socks or tights), but I also have a pretty sweeeet pair of boots for my Goddess, as you can see.

Also on the shopping list:-
- a suitably-sized “canvas”; a wooden board of some kind, perhaps even a second-hand coffee table top…
- a mannequin torso for careful reshaping into an upper body “leaning” into our world…
- a head of some kind; I’m thinking a “paint-it-yourself” Hallowe’en mask blank, over which I’ll construct a stylised black patent leather “mask”.

I hope to have much more to report on this intriguing project soon. It’s started well, and motivation levels are high. Also on the horizon is Task 88 – Create usable stage/screen/cosplay props of three pieces of costume or equipment from my own projects – pieces have been acquired, techniques researched – results soon!

15 – Something Of A Rethink

Given that my usual blogging location – LiveJournal – is throwing several sorts of fits right now, I’ve started looking into alternatives, and I already have a number (that number being three). I still have the old Diaryland blog that was plugged into patentdragon.co.uk, and the blog at Codexed.com – which is what eventually emerged after the expiry of Diary-X.com.

Diaryland: The former is highly adaptable, and has that multiple-posts-per-”page” format I’ve come to prefer, and I’m thinking that maybe a “plug-in” arrangement might work again, with a custom frame page and subdomain here at THEPatentDragon.com.

My Codexed blog, on the other hand, has been something of a junkyard lately, being the prospective launch-pad for a variety of side-projects, but it’s just as adaptable – pity that it doesn’t seem to have the multi-entry page format, though.

Option 3 would be a choice between turning this blog into my main forum of expression, or creating an entirely new blog here. I’ve already dusted things down here, installing a new template which I like a bit more than the previous one – the custom header image is something the old set-up was lacking…

and so, the audition process begins.

14 – Concerning SlutWalk

It’s not often that the news brings up something that I really feel strongly about – but just the other day, I happened to come across Slutwalk

…and I found that I couldn’t agree more. Rape is a crime, pure and simple, and nothing justifies it. NOTHING. Anyone who suggests that a certain style of clothing somehow legitimises sexual assault is basically saying that rape is “okay in certain circumstances” – are they now going to suggest those who assault children should get away with it because the child in question was wearing a “sexy romper suit”? Surely not.

We already live in a world where the law seems to be skewed in favour of the criminal – the victim is so often left to sink or swim. Now, it seems, they’re encouraging crime by wearing “provocative clothing” – what next? It becomes “okay” to steal someone’s smartphone because the victim just happens to be seen with it in public? You only have yourself to blame should someone steal your expensive car…?

No. It is a crime to steal. The only “justification” for that crime would be the desperate need to feed ones family, but this country is hardly rife with that kind of deprivation…

Of course, it doesn’t take the media long to totally, and spectacularly MISS THE POINT…

This is not some equivalent of African-Carribeans “reclaiming The ‘N’ Word”. SlutWalk is apparently “celebrating the word ‘slut’”, says this news-item – not according to their own website…

In the press section , there’s a link to an interesting blog-post about a 175-year old prostitute murder in which the perpetrator got off because the jury said “no man should hang for the murder of a whore”. The culture of victim-blaming has deep roots, it seems.

There is a definite feminist flavour to the campaign – so why am I interested in it? My answers are:

1) Why shouldn’t I be? And
2) Take another look, dear reader…

Nobody should be victimised because of what they wear. No-one should be assumed to be a lesser person because they dress in a fashion that the observer finds unacceptable. I abhor the whole concept of “pigeon-holing”, which is fundamental to the whole SlutWalk issue – and that’s why I’m proud to say, right here and now, that I support the SlutWalk movement. Long may they walk!

*UPDATE: 6 June 2011* Heh, maybe not the best line to sign off on. In an ideal world, the marches would only need to be held once, and everyone would get the message. Some hope…

In the meantime, I have located several news items covering the idea a whole bunch better than I have…

13 – Concerning patentdragon.co.uk

The previous Patent Dragon online incarnation at patentdragon.co.uk may have expired earlier this year, but the name lives on! Having been victim of a rather unwieldy hosting plan for several years, I chose to allow the domain to expire, then reacquired it at a far more manageable price, and redirected it here. I am considering re-establishing the previous site in its own sub-domain, but that’s a plan for another time, given that I am currently engaged in some serious relocation.

As always, stay tuned…!

12 – One Year On…

THEPatentDragon.com was established one year ago today.

So, what’s the score? So far, not a great deal has happened, but external circumstances have rather dominated things for most of those twelve months. Very soon, however, the turmoil should be dying down, and a new “world order” established that will allow this writer to sit down and take stock, with a view to moving forward, and making the whole concept of “The Patent Dragon” mean something.

Expect more developments VERY soon!

11 – Coming Soon: Mission 101 Task 88…

Task 88 being Create usable stage/screen/cosplay props of three pieces of costume or equipment from my own projects. This – officially a “Reignstorm cultist mask”, due to feature in the next “episode” of The Secret Adventures of Mane-of-Night – will be a pretty major endeavour, but I’ve already made some card mock-ups, and I’ve got some foam sheet for construction of a life-size “dry-run”. Crafting experience gained from this could just help with another Task – 94 – Make a PD-worthy pair of boots from scratch! – now that’s going to be interesting…

I’ll be updating regularly about both Tasks as they progress. Busy times are dawning…

Update: 21 November 2010 – here are the mockups…

10 – Supporting Spirit Day

I honestly don’t believe I’ve heard of Spirit Day before, but anything that addresses, reduces and hopefully in the end stops bullying, no matter who the victim, for whatever reason, gets my support. I’ve recycled my Mission 101: Task 94 sunrise photo for this noble cause.

Enjoy – but spare a thought for those who suffer. Just because you don’t see blood, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t HURT.

9 – Mission 101 Clarification: Task 91 “Create A Personal Goddess”

So, what does “create a personal goddess” actually mean?

Two things, essentially…

1) create a “sculpture” in the spirit of modern art sculptor Allen Jones

- Source: biography and portfolio at sculpture.org.uk

taking as its immediate influence his (in)famous Chair, Table and Hatstand (1969), and

2) in the process create a physical expression of hopes, beliefs and fantasies.

The Mission is coming up to a major milestone – two years left – and the conditions are right for numerous Tasks to be set in motion and/or completed. This Task is one of those…
